Artist couples at the Festival imagetanz at brut, Vienna: "WE" by Amanda Piña & Daniel Zimmermann.
Vienna - Within constellations of authorship in contemporary choreography the forming of couples is nothing unusual. And from time to time they work out fine, as with deufert + plischke or Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten. imagetanz, the festival at the Viennese brut is now showing an extraordinary work of an artist couple: WE, by Amanda Piña & Daniel Zimmermann.
Piña/Zimmermann are projecting the group-image of their audence who are sitting on a stand, live onto a screen. Into this virtual mirror, the artists set comic-like thought-bubbles, such as: "Wow, I'm really good looking today" and "Did I turn off my phone?". In the face of what is presented here, one person regrets: "Oh, no, if I only had known..." It is all thoughts people could have while sitting in a theatre. Using wit, know- ledge of human nature and a masterly dramaturgy, WE turns into a feast of the recognition, the identificati- on with our own mirror image and the amusement of role allocation.
The couple is obviously good at defying logic and at rendering visible hidden claims; the cooperation between choreographer and visual artist turns out to be a recipe for success. (Helmut Ploebst / DER STANDARD, Print-Edition, 17.3.2008)
